Art/Creative direction involves a lot more managerial stuff which can really take the fun out of the job. I guess my advice is, figure out what you enjoy about the field and keep pushing in that direction. This isn't essentially a different goal than I had at 5 years in, but I think my confidence level is way higher in those regards. The freedom of freelance works very well for me and essentially at this point, my only goal is to keep building a client base and trying to make cool work. I'm currently balancing being a sole proprietor company and being a generalist freelancer. Not everyone needs or should be a creative director. Some people are still struggling to freelance regularly throughout the year and then others are just going up and up. Some people are stuck working at the hot shops doing long hours and are not happy about it. We are looking for a creative, dedicated, and self-driven Graphic/Motion Designer who will be responsible for producing designs and concepts on a daily. What I'm finding is that some people carved a niche for themselves in the industry for better or for worse. that and I still love the field which keeps me motivated to push my limits. I fall much more into the later category. Some motion designers do it because it's relatively fun, different and unique, while still providing the all important paycheck. Some motion designers are designers because they want to create amazing things and become excellent artists. At least 5-7 years of experience in graphic design, motion graphics. Try not to let your work dominate who you are. Create complex visual graphics, including but not limited to animations and motion graphics. Am I ever going to be a renowned motion graphic artist like Andrew Kramer? Probably not. Is there room for raises and advancement? Yes. Is it less prestigeous? Abso-fucking-lutely. That led me to my current job at a huge corporation doing motion work for them but NOT AT ALL in the same capacity as I was for the studios I had previously worked for. I could have theoretically tried to become art director or something, but the studio seemed a BIT on the shaky side so I opted to move back home to Ohio on account of my wife being pregnant and all our family being in Ohio. Then at the studio in NY I stayed there for 7 years and learned a decent amount and basically became complacent. I started at a small studio, then went to a news station, then found a job at another studio that could pay more in upstate New York (moved from Ohio). I've been in the game for around 9 years.
